Client: NYU Steinhardt School of Education

Objective: To express the new mission and vision of NYU Steinhardt. This “mission book” was created to express the school’s new definition of education, serve as a rallying point for faculty and staff, be a fund-raising tool and assist in faculty recruitment.

Solution: After meeting with the Dean, Associate Deans and their staff, and reading essays, speeches and meeting notes, concepted a brochure and wrote copy that defines NYU Steinhardt’s revitalized mission and vision. Visit http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/steinhardt/mission to see the copy converted to an online presentation. A Historic Opportunity
As we look back at our first 115 years and forward to the complexities of the 21st century, we at NYU Steinhardt find ourselves presented with a historic opportunity. We find traditional education and research paradigms inadequate to meet the needs of both students and a global society in a profound period of hyper-change. We find that Steinhardt, long at the forefront of pedagogical research, learning, and practice, has the academic resources and vision to address these needs.

NYU Steinhardt is the largest, most dynamic school of its kind in the nation. Our home in the heart of New York City uniquely positions us to learn and act in a city that is both the planet’s cultural capital and a microcosm of the world itself. New York University’s mission of being a “private university in the public service” is a call to action, one that Steinhardt has wholeheartedly embraced. In responding to a rapidly changing world, Steinhardt is working to redefine education as a holistic human endeavor. At Steinhardt, we link cutting-edge research — in education, communication, the arts, and health — with action and equip our graduates with the knowledge, insight, and experience necessary to address the challenges of the 21st century.

In an age in which information is currency, the global distribution of resources is manifestly unjust, and the media are playing an ever more prominent role in our lives, new modes of learning — holistic and interdisciplinary — have the potential to respond to the issues confronting society. It is this evolution, this revolution of learning, that is at the heart of Steinhardt’s work to rethink the role of the professions — and the meaning of the word “education.”
